Below are progress photos received this week from the new Zafara warehouse project at Grantham.

PSL are employed by MCS working under a D&B contract and have been responsible for Structural/Civils design of the warehouse/mezzanine and external yard/parking.

Of particular benefit to MCS have been our carrying out a 3-D topographical cut/feel exercise and which has enabled us to establish building and external yard levels to provide optimum net balance of existing material at site by the re-use of recovered sand/gravels as sub-base.

A further design challenge overcome by our team was to establish a gravity surface/foul drainage systems which discharges at shallow falls along the length of the access road.

Site works commenced in February 2021 and are programmed for completion in August.

Pure Structures have been engaged by TMD building surveyors to work on a second offices refurbishment at the Castle Park Business Park In Cambridge (Our previous involvement being at Abacus House in 2017).

The project comprises the major refurbishment of a 1980s office building to current building standards including replacement windows and M&E.

Also included are the demolition and enlargement of the existing corner atrium and a three story extension in the location of proposed reception to the rear.

The PSL team have arranged investigations of the existing concrete frame and have carried out design and detailing in 3-D using Autodesk Revit.

When our long-standing client George Martin asked us to help with the design of a roundabout clock, we were delighted to join the team!

The clock is designed/built by clock a specialist Smiths of Derby and sits on a feature plinth at the centre of the roundabout access to Toomey’s Rochford car dealership site.

We are optimistic that the project will be delivered ‘on time’!

Heathcote School and Science College

The new Year Seven building is a two-storey design with a facade to mirror the existing Sixth Form building.

Designed to hold 240 students there will also be science labs, a food tech room, and a small assembly hall.

Construction was completed in September 2017 with a covered outdoor playing area.

JCT Design and Build

Viking House is a residential development in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, comprising of four separate buildings, three of which are four-storey traditional designed blocks and one 8-storey Reinforced Concrete (RC) frame block.

Works were completed in 2020 and include 87 one-and-two bedroom flats for affordable and intermediate rent, comprising 3 4-storey blocks and 1 9-storey block complete with car parking, a children’s play area and external works.

The buildings replace a former four-storey residential building which was demolished prior to our appointment.

Last night (19th April) Pure Structures entered a team of 6 into the Thomas Sinden quiz night raising money for Coram – one of the UKs first children’s charities helping to transform the lives of some of the countries most disadvantaged children.

With 10 teams in total, we certainly did not disgrace ourselves and came comfortably within the pack.

Our team did however excel with the challenge to build the tallest structure in 10 minutes out of spaghetti and jelly babies.

We were by consensus acknowledged as the outstanding winner adopting the ‘DNA’ repeating triangular form.

A couple of photographs of work in progress are attached prior to a heinous act of sabotage by the TS host team!

Project Value – £4m

Phase II development of business park on the historic Thremhall Park site.

PSL have worked with Cowper Griffiths Architects to design four additional unique buildings including a landmark pavilion building providing conference and venue facilities.

The project design has been developed for procurement as a traditional contract with project management provided by Barker Associates.

Contractor appointment is due in October 2017 and with project completion programmed for Spring 2019.

Project Value – £17.5m

An exciting commercial offices development on a site allocated as a business park for the future expansion of Stansted Airport.

The development comprises three adjacent elliptical and leaning towers at 5, 6, 7 storeys.

The design includes link bridges enabling access to the central tower at all levels and a main central access tunnel to the adjacent concourse.

The building design has required complex 3D modelling, in particular incorporating 2nd order (p∆) movement and requiring ‘dummy’ analysis to ensure the ‘as constructed’ and ‘design’ profiles are aligned.

The development as a whole is positioned within a two level deep basin together with a ‘turn-key’ contract car park.

The offices development is a futuristic design to Bream excellent standards and making use of latest materials and technology.

Construction is due to commence in Spring 2018 with completion programmed for the Summer 2020.

Bishop’s Stortford Secondary

PSL have been appointed by BBCL for the design of the new Bishop’s Stortford Secondary School as part of the HSBP framework.

The £27m project is for a 1200 pupil secondary school as part of the Bishop’s Stortford North development.

The project includes a feature pedestrian access bridge to proposed playing fields to the North of the A120.

Stage 1 reporting was completed in September 2017 and which including preliminary studies of the main school building, access bridge and proposals for ‘cut and fill’ of the playing fields site.
